When we talk about one of our athletes, we usually ask about their beginnings and we find different stories. Some came across their discipline by chance and there are those who found it inspired by a family member or by following the recommendations of a friend or acquaintance. Others, however, do not remember how, because it is innate in them. Today we talk to Fer Lamadrid who discovered, at a very early age, that his thing was “reading the waves”.

Fer Lamadrid is a true reference in the world of windsurfing, with a long career and a great collection of triumphs behind him. His family of sailors encouraged him to discover the sea from the cradle. It was at the age of nine that he decided to “take up the art of sailing” but, as he tells us, “in his own way” . Fer experiences windsurfing as an exciting experience that translates into enjoying himself as only a child knows how to do and that, in addition, has allowed him to meet people who have become “brothers”, as he tells us. Let's discover Fer Lamadrid.

Getting to know Fer Lamadrid…

Why did you get into windsurfing?

I come from a family of regatta sailors, so let's say that sailing is an art and many in my family have it in their veins. At first, I didn't like the idea. Since we were little, we were thrown into the sea to see who had the gift of reading the wind. Let's say that I was more of a wave reader and at nine years old I decided to take up the art of sailing, but in my own way. What other way was there to enjoy the waves while fulfilling the family tradition of using the wind? Without a doubt, windsurfing was the key.

What has windsurfing taught you? What does it bring to you?

I don't think windsurfing has taught me much more than how to choose the right wetsuit (and even then I don't always get it right) and maybe how to read windguru. All I know is that every time I get in the water I feel like I'm nine years old again. I have brothers wherever I go and I only surround myself with people who have as much fun as I do. The door to a little one for after training.

Fer Lamadrid: “What matters is knowing that you gave 100% every second”

Is there any competition that you remember fondly?

If I had to choose a competition, I would go back to China 2017, my last junior world championship. It was an incredible experience, feeling the unity of the Spanish team, feeling like Olympians for a week. Without a doubt, no one knows the effort and sacrifice behind each preparation. But what matters is knowing that you gave 100% in every second of the competition and that was what I experienced.

What projects do you have for 2021?

This year I can't say if we'll be able to meet the schedule. I'd like to think that we'll be able to do at least one World Cup and possibly one European Championship. My plan is to continue working from home as much as possible. I hope that all of this affects us all as little as possible and that we can stay safe, which is the most important thing.

Do you have any habits before competing?

My latest habit is to slap my helmet before racing. It's like having a saucepan on your head and someone hitting you with a stick. It helps me concentrate and reminds me to go all out!!

We are left with the energy, the good vibes and the lesson that we can remain children forever, if we are truly passionate about what we do. Good luck to our champion!
