Today we dedicate our post to our great athlete Miguel Ángel Serrano Ramos, better known in the world of bodybuilding as Curro McGrath . He is a clear example that where there is a will, there is a way and that attitude, in many cases, allows you to win the battle even against the wind. After speaking with him, it is clearer than ever that excuses have no place when we fight for a goal. “Bodybuilding has made me believe in myself when no one else did,” says the bodybuilder from Melilla with an excellent career behind him.
Curro McGrath has always shown a strong attitude, and not only on the stage. He tells us about some of the difficulties he had to overcome, which show that desire, despite the circumstances, means victory: “A month before my first competition, in which I was proclaimed Champion of Andalusia and, later, Absolute Champion, I lost everything.” But this was not enough to stop him on his way, since if there is one thing that this discipline has taught him, he says, it is to trust in himself “even in very difficult moments.”
Getting to know Curro McGrath better…
When did you get into bodybuilding?
I was a goalkeeper for one of the best teams in my city, where I was for fourteen years. After a shoulder injury, I left the sport I loved the most and focused on improving my shoulder mobility with rehabilitation, swimming and weight training. I quickly began to get the hang of weight training and when I finished rehabilitation my brother, who was already in the world of bodybuilding, started to get me involved. Let's say he was my first trainer! And let's also say that my unconditional love for Son Goku and the other Dragon Ball characters came into play. Seeing those strong and muscular physiques awakened something in me...
What has bodybuilding taught you?
For me it is EVERYTHING! It has made me believe in myself when no one else did, even in very difficult times. It has taught me to be meticulous in everything I do, to be organized, to have a more cool head, to be very close to the new generations, to study and read about this complex world. You could really say that I have become bodybuilding myself. I am everything I wanted to be. I learn every day from great athletes, in every preparation, in every competition, in every training session. It is a constant learning process. Knowledge does not take up space.
What are your 3 must-have Amix supplements?
I couldn't miss Glutamine + BCAA in a forest fruit flavour. Even though I use very little protein, something that I can't miss is my Melon-Yogurt
“I know what I am capable of and I like being on stage”
Which competition do you remember fondly?
If I had to remember one fondly, it would undoubtedly be the first of my competitions in 2014, where I was proclaimed Champion of Andalusia and, later, Absolute Champion of the same. But that is not why I remember it with special affection. Let's say that a month before I lost everything. My mother and I suffered a forced eviction for reasons beyond our control and I spent several days sleeping inside my car with my suitcases, memories of sixteen years and my pet. Even so, I went to work, did my cardio on an empty stomach, a nearby bar prepared my diet meals that I brought myself and I showered either at a friend's house or at the gym. Then, when I heard my name proclaimed champion, I couldn't help but throw myself on the floor of the platform and burst into tears. I remembered all those days.
Any quirks before going up on stage?
None… I just do my thing. I don’t get nervous, on the contrary. I know what I’m capable of and I like being on stage. I’m completely happy up there. Nothing can compare to that moment.
What are your plans for 2021?
For now, I'm going to take a break from getting on stage this year, since in my last competition, about a month ago, I competed in a higher category than usual and I did not do badly at all. So I want to focus on gaining more muscle quality and size to be competitive in that category.
We have no doubt that our athlete will succeed in all the challenges that come his way. We will remember today his example of overcoming, sacrifice and spirit of continuous training and improvement. Discipline and perseverance are, without a doubt, the way to reach the best version of yourself and Curro McGrath knows a lot about that.
